William B. Baxter at Ft. Donelson

I found a William B. Baxter who fought with the Confed.41st Infantry at Ft. Donelson. According to the military records I copied at the state Archives, this Baxter enlisted in Tousdale Co. at the age of 41. My gr-grandfather was William B. Baxter, and at the time of the beginning of the Civil War, was living in McNairy Co. and was 36 years old. My grandmother, who was born in 1869, wrote in her diary to her grandchildren that her father ran a store in Bethel Springs (McNairy Co.) during the war. So I assumed he didn't fight at all. However, there was a gap in his and his wife's child bearing from late 1860 to early 1864. His having been gone to fight would account for this gap. The William B. Baxter that I found who fought and was captured at Ft. Donelson, later released, and kept on as a Capt. with the reorganized 41st, resigned from the military and his resignation was accepted due to his immaciated body from having had 8 months of diarreha (doctor's recommendation stated this). He was released and send home in June 1863. That homecoming might have produced the child that was born in Feb. 1864. I read where the records of the 41st, who fought at Donelson where most were either killed or captured, were destroyed and had to be reconstructed. Could the information about the William B. Baxter, 41, from Trousdale Co., be incorrect? All of My gr-grandfather's younger brothers fought with the Confederacy. At age 35, he was not too old to fight. But, another doubt in my mind that this Capt. William B. Baxter and my grandfather are the same, is that the Capt. was released because of poor health, yet my grandfather not only fathered another child within 8 months of his release, but he went on to father several more children, and lived to be 77 years old. Plus, no William B. Baxter drew a pension to my knowledge.
Please help with this puzzle.
