Thomas Clemmons enlisted as a Private in Captain W. L. Horn's Company, 1st Battalion Tennessee Cavalry** May 23, 1861 at Nashville, Tennessee by Jo. G. Pickett for a period of 12 months, last recored on February 12, 1862 at Chestnut Mound, Tennessee as "Present. No bridle," no further records

**This company subsequently became Company B, 1st Tennessee Cavalry Battalion (McNairy's).

The 1ar (McNairy's) Battalion Tennessee Cavalry, also called the 1st Battalion West Tennessee Cavalry, was composed of five companies which were organized early in 1861 for twelve months and served in the Provisional Army of Tennessee. It was accepted into the service of the Confederate States September 19, 1861, and re-organized under the Conscription Act in May, 1862. The battalion was consolidate into three companies June 13, 1862, and, with the four companies into which the 7th Battalion Tennessee Cavalry was consolidated, formed the 22nd Regiment Tennessee Cavalry, which was also called the 2nd (Barteau's) Regiment Tennesse Cavalry.

1st Battalion, Tennessee Cavalry (McNairy's)

1st Cavalry Battalion was organized and mustered in to Confederate service in September, 1861. Its members were raised in Davidson, Williamson, Cannon, Wilson, DeKalb, and Rutherford counties. With five companies and 370 men, the unit moved to Kentucky and here confronted the Federals. Later it was active in Mississippi, then was reduced to three companies and in June, 1862, merged into Barteau's 22nd Tennessee Cavalry Regiment. Its commanders were Lieutenant Colonel Frank N. McNairy and Major Green Malcolm.

T. Clemans enlisted as a Private May 23, 186_ at Nashville by J.G. Pickett for a period of 12 months, recorded on the June 30,1862 muster of Company A, 2nd Regiment Tennessee Cavalry** as "Discharged & final statement given," discharged July 16, 1862, paid July 24, 1862

**This company was formed by the consolidation of Companies A & B, 1st (McNairy's) Battalion Tennessee Cavalry.

Clemmons enlisted as a Private in Company I, 7th Tennessee Infantry June 15, 1861 at Nashville, recorded on the August 1861 muster as "Attending Sick in Hospital," "Appointed (3rd) Lieutenant for gallant conduct in the battle of Fredericksburg to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Lieut. W. C. Baird," n. d., advanced to 1st Lieutenant, April 23, 1864, admitted Confederate State Hospital, Petersburg, Virginia March 28, 1865 "Minie Ball, Aerop abdomen, severe," captured in hospital at Petersburg April 3, 1865, subsequently transferred to Fair Ground Post Hospital, Petersburg May 1, gunshot wound both thighs*, died July 3, buried "In vicinity of Hospital,"

*This term was generally used for a wound to the genitals.
