The Orphan of Davis (Hatchie) Bridge

The 1920 Issue of Confederate Veteran Magazine had an article in it that almost threw me out of my chair. Buying a farm in north Miss. I have become interested in the local battlefields and Confederate activity in the area. This story is remarkable and I think that very little is known about it.The retreating Confederate Army crossed the Hatchie River at Davis Bridge. The 35th Miss., Moores Brigade and other Confederate elements began to cross when suddenly Union troops opened up on them with terrible fire. The Confederates swarmed back across the Hatchie to escape certain death or capture. The battle raged for hours and from all letters Ive read "was a very hot place to be". The Confederates eventually made there way about five miles down the east side of the Hatchie on the old Bone Yard Road and crossed to the west side and escaped,at Crums Mill. When the fireing seized, Illinois soldiers in a sedge field ,heard a baby crying ? The Illinois troopers took the child, about a year old, to authorities to try to find out the identity of child and where this child belonged. To their surprise, nobody claimed the child nor knew whose child it belonged too. The Illinois trooper who had found the "waif" sent it north to Illinois and raised the child as his own. When the "waif" reached manhood he returned to Pocohantas,TN. and area to try and find out his true identity......to no avail. This story was written in the 1920 Vol. # 28 NO. 11 page # 435 issue of Confederate Veteran Magazine. Truely remarkable...What was a baby doing on the battlefield ? Why did nobody claim him ? Was he part of the 35th Miss. ? What a mystery ? Ffrank Wood......butternut4662@dixie-net.com
