D. Breck Ramsey's grandfather, Judge Daniel Breck, lived in Richmond and he had actually visited for weeks at a time. He may have been hand-picked because he knew the route from Cumberland Gap and the terrain around Richmond. His cousin Robert Ramsey appears to have been the scout for Edmund Kirby Smith for the same reason. After the war D. B. Ramsey became an Episcopal priest and died in Covington, KY, at the home of his sister who had, believe it or not, married George Washington, a relative of the original.
