Re: resignation of an officer - meaning of wording

He first enrolled as a Brevet 2nd Lieutenant which is also called Jr. 2nd Lieutenant, or 3rd Lieutenant. Bottom man of the Totem pole.

I suspect that he hadn't fully matured and wasn't up to the job.

Believe these census records show his pre and post war.

Neither his, or a widow show up in the Index of Tennessee Confederate pensions.

Company C, roster of officers: 2nd Lieutenant A. J. Lacey resigned August 15, 1863

Andrew J.Lacey [sic] enrolled as a Brevet 2nd Lieutenant in Company C, 8th Tennessee Cavalry* August 2,1862 at Cookeville, by Col. G. G. Dibrell for the duration of the war, resigned 1st Lieutenant July 1, 1863

June 17, 1863, in his endorsement Col. Dibrell notes " . . . Lacy is not qualified for the office he holds." The following endorsement, June 20, by BGen. [?] states: ' . . . this officer is not competent to hold the position the service will be benefited by the acceptance"

* This regiment was organized as Partisan Rangers in September, 1862, with twelve companies, and was remustered as cavalry in October, 1862, and consolidated into ten companies. It was officially designated the 13th** Regiment Tennessee Cavalry bby the A. & I. G. O., but was mustered in the field for a while as the 8th Regiment Tennessee Cavalry, and as Dibrell's Regiment Tennessee Cavalry.

** Their compiled service records are filed as the 13th Tenn. Cavalry
