John J. Jacobs (1st TN Heavy Artillary?)

Hello,

I was wondering if you could help. I am just starting my research into family genealogy and to my surprise I learned that my Great Great Great Grandfather was a confederate soldier.

The only way I know this so far is that he shows up on the South Dakota 1885 Civil War Census. Unfortunately it doesn't list his regiment. One other confederate soldier settled in the same county and lists his regiment as 1 Tennessee Artillery. I searched that regiment and there was a John Jacobs (company C) . I am unsure if it is my grandfather. His enlistment date on the census is April 1861.

1 Tennessee Heavy Artillery. (Jackson's Regiment.)
Rank In: Private
Rank Out: Private

Is there any way to track this back to see if this is my Grandfather's regiment and if not what would be a good next step in trying to determine where he served?

Thank you,
Mathew
