J. W. Dodson, Private, Captain J. R. Williams' Company, Unattached Cavalry, enlisted August 20, 1862 at Waverly, Tennessee by Captain Ayres for 12 months, discharged December 11, 1862 by order of Genl Bagg at Murfreesboro, Tenn., no further records

[Company] "Pay due as Infantry from 6th Dec., 1861, to 19th August, 1862. Pay due as Cvalry from 20th August, 1862, to 31st Dec. '62. Entitled to for private horses (40 cts. per day) from 20th of Aug. '62, to Dec. 31st, '62."

This company was re-organized by Act of Congress--entering the service originally for 12 months,--November 27th, 1862

Company Muster Roll for Nov & Dec., 1862, Record of Events

"This company has never been mustered for pay heretofore. It was Stationed at Danville, Tenn. by order of A. S. Johnson [sic] Removed to Henderson Station by order of Genl Bragg. It was neglected [?] to be ordered away when Corinth was Evacuated had to Scatter about 7th June 1862 gathered up again 20th Aug 1862 and Mounted on Horseback Operated within the enemys lines until 15 Nov. 1862 which action was approved and the company ordered to remain mounted. This roll contains all the names of the original Muster Rolls besides a number of new recruits. The original roll was left by Capt. R. W. Ayers Near Hallisprings Miss. it not being safe to pass through the Federal lines with it. The company was assigned by order of Genl Bragg to the Provost Marshal Genl of the Army of Tenn.. in which capacity it is now acting. All the Company Books and papers were lost when we left Danville, Tenn. and Henderson Station Tenn."
