I posted on this topic some months ago. I searched the site and didn't find the thread, so I'll pick it up from memory: John Morgan, who was said to be a major, a provost marshal and who was assigned to checking passports at Union City, Tennessee, in September 1861, was shot dead by a man named Little or Littell at that site. A message board member posted that Morgan was definitely not CSA but could have been in a state militia. How can I be sure he wasn't CSA and if he was in the state militia, where can I look for records of that?
