Re: "BURNT COWAN HOUSE" - BATTLE OF STONE'S RIVER

I am unable at this time to locate a specific reference for this information, but I know I read it somewhere. I'll have to look into it more. From what I have heard the house was being used by Federal sharpshooters prior to Dec 31 to take potshots at the Confederate lines. Confederate batteries positioned on Wayne's Hill were ordered to destroy it. Most of the stories I have heard state the Cobb's Battery was the one that set the house on fire, but a re-enactor at Stones River this past summer, playing the part of the commander of the 5th Co, Washington Artillery, claimed that it was one of their guns that did it. Both batteries were positioned on Wayne's Hill and it could have been either or both that were fireing that day.
