Benjamin Johnson

Hello Friends,
Hoping you may be able to help me. My 6th great-grandfather left us with a very sad story. He was the father of 9 children. He married Caroline Priscilla
Austin in 1845. Now how Caroline received news that Ben was in a Southern Illinois prison I do not know. The story goes that Ben was in southern Illinois
as a prisoner of the Federal Army. Caroline took one of her older boys, went to the prison and returned with the body in a "carry-'all, he was bound, hand and
foot, and rats gnawed his body, severed vital arteries and he bled to death. We would very much like to know what happened to Benjamin , it is confusing
because Caroline was said to have stopped at the Davidson County Courthouse, and that it was said he died in Davidson County Tennessee.
No military record has been found. Benjamin was 48 years of age and Caroline 38.
In the Will book 19, page 583, the settlement of the widow's support is recorded . The widow's support was not recorded untill April 28, 1865, but it was made in
April 1863 after the death of Ben in January of the same year, not recorded untill later.
The Johnson family has never known anything about Benjamin's time in the military, what his Regiment was, his Company, his rank, Commanders or anything
else.
Benjamin lived in the 6th Dist. of Davidson County, Tennessee with his wife and 9 children to help on the farm.

Thank You,
Joyce A. Luna
