Although modern citations and those of the National Archives
note the regiment as mounted infantry, they were in fact considered Cavalry.
Prior to December 1863, they were infantry. Thereafter, BGen,
Vaughn had them mounted and all regimental and brigade correspondence thereafter records them as Cavalry.
Following Lee's surrender, they formed part of Jefferson Davis's Cavalry escort.
