William R. Trotter mentions in his book,Buswhackers, on page 202 that there was a standing price of $5,000,in real money not Confederate notes on the head of Daniel Ellis. He also says that in his autobiography, Ellis records dozen of appalling atrocities committed by Confederate guerrillas, some of which are corroborated by others. He however does not once acknowledge that Unionist partisans were committing the same outrages against Confederate families with equally sadistic gusto.Ellis however does give the most searing impression of the horror of Appalachin guerrilla fighting.
