Re: 18th Tennessee Infantry Regiment

Mr. Hodge, In the last year and a half I have been doing a bit of research on the 18th Tennessee Infantry Regiment. My interest in this particular unit began after a friend of mine showed me the grave of one of his ancestors in a small country grave yard. The grave stone is believed to have been purchased from or perhaps donated by The Daughters of the Confederacy. It is the grave of William Harris Morse of Company "I" of the 18th Tennessee Infantry C.S.A born Dec 25, 1836 and died Dec 20 1901. After doing some research on the unit itself I was able to prepare a brief history of the unit that I originally intended for a local newspaper article but I have yet to submit it. I did however give a copy of my article to the family that are descendants of this man. The only surviving story of his Civil War experience was a brief story of his description of what he called the battle above the clouds. The description had to do more with his memory of the scenic view than the battle itself. I have not been able to find a roster for the members of company "I" that was formed from men in the Wilson county Tennessee townships and farming communities. The best records that I have found on the entire 18th Tennessee Infantry Regiment were of the men from Sumner County Tennessee Company "B". It is my conjecture that because the Sumner County men were a bit more prosperous than the Wilson County men that they may have had a higher degree of literacy and perhaps kept better records. This is only my suspicion. I found a few interesting references to this unit in a book called "Soldiering in the Army of Tennessee" by Larry J. Daniels. If there is any way that I might assist you please feel free to correspond via my E-mail address.
