Bob- would be hard to say how they did it since neither command exist in the drill manuals of the day. However, I believe both would involve moving a two rank battleline to the left by having the men face left in two ranks(normally you would "double" into files of four men. To the depth of a regiment would imply the unit was being moved to the left a distance equal to the length of a regimental front. A full strength regiment occupied approx 1000 feet of frontage(2 ranks with two feet per man. The second quote would imply they moved forward first and then shifted to the left. They might also have done it at an oblique. The following site has a number of on-line drill manuals if you want to get a feel for how a CW unit was moved and manuvered.
