Bob- would be hard to say how they did it since neither command exist in the drill manuals of the day. However, I believe both would involve moving a two rank battleline to the left by having the men face left in two ranks(normally you would "double" into files of four men. To the depth of a regiment would imply the unit was being moved to the left a distance equal to the length of a regimental front. A full strength regiment occupied approx 1000 feet of frontage(2 ranks with two feet per man. The second quote would imply they moved forward first and then shifted to the left.
