According to the information in my book on the 39th Tennessee, there were two men, from Company I who were captured at the Battle of Piedmont on June 5, 1864. They were Pvt. James Knight and Pvt. Thomas Kidwell. That does not mean that the entire Company I was in the Shenandoah Valley during that period of time. My ancestor, who was in Company H, was serving with Col. Bradford in East Tennessee, yet his Capt. was present at the Battle of Piedmont and was killed in during the battle. So it appears that the companies were not completely intact.
