Civil War Army Records

Army of Tennesee Records in Austin.

I am looking for medical records for the Conscript Hospital, Camp Number One of Instruction, Camp Watts, near Notasulga, Alabama

It is my understanding that the Confederate Army medical records for the Army of Tennesee are in the State Records Center in Austin, under the ledger of Samuel Hollingsworth Stout, Director, Confederate Medical Department, Army of Tennesee.

Do you need Tennesee records? Who is your point of contact for looking for these records?

Specifically, I am looking for the medical records for Warren Anderson Mitchell, native of Jones County, Georgia, According to Confederate Widow's Pension Claim, Warren Anderson Mitchell was serving on duty, in the recruiting office of Camp Number One of Instruction, Camp Watts, near Notasulga, Alabama, when he contracted pneumonia and died on November 20, 1862. I would be interested in the death train records, too. Mr. Mitchell was brought back to his old home in Clinton, Georgia. Mrs. Lucinda Christian Mitchell, Warren's widowed spouse, was a survivor of General Sherman's March to the Sea. Because Lucinda was an evacuee, I think that her records for Warren Anderson Mitchell were destroyed prior to the evacuation.

These records are not at NARA is what I have been told. At the New Year I posted to NARA, expecting to wait the usual 8-10 weeks. However, on February 25th, I received a postcard from NARA saying that, because of anthrax positivity, NARA was just then assigning a research number to the request for Warren's compiled service record. Say no to this problem is what it means. The postcard stated that the research would then be performed in 8-10 weeks, without further delay. Three days later, I received a letter from NARA saying that NARA did not have the compiled service record for Warren Anderson Mitchell. I think that the NARA requests were shredded. New problem, this research is so difficult.

Warren's records are with the Army of Tennesee. Any help wtih researching the Civil War records of Warren Anderson Mitchell, would be appreciated. Where is the right wording?

Thanks,
