Re: Second Battle of Cabin Creek, 139 Years Ago To

Hi Joe,

The town of Pryor was Pryor's Creek until they dropped the "creek" in the name some years back. Like some Oklahoma towns, the townsite has moved a couple of times. My hometown of Claremore had three sites before finally settling on the one where it is located today. By the way, the city was originally named "Clermont" after an Osage chief. A misspelling by some railroad clerk had the name appear as "Claremore" on the railroad map....and the name stuck.

Yes, it is nice to see Stand Watie finally getting his due. More than ten years ago, I worked with a gentleman who was close to ex-Cherokee Chief Norma Mankiller. I mentioned something about Stand Watie and the Civil War and why Watie is not really revered among the Cherokee. He said although the Cherokee Council would remain mum on the subject, to many Cherokees Watie was a mixed-blood and an outlaw. I think this view is finally changing.

I grew up with many of the descendants of the men who shaped Indian Territory. Many of my classmates were native american and had the names of Drew, Ross, Jumper, Tee-Hee, etc. I hope as they grow older they will teach their children about their famous ancestors...no matter what side or of what "blood" they are from.

Thanks for writing.
Best Regards,
Steve
