I know this is an old post but just an added comment. It depends on who you ask. There are monuments to both Ross and Watie in front of the old capital building in downtown Tahlequah. I would argue that Watie is better known by most tribal members than is Ross. For those who identify with the Southern Cherokee, Watie is famous and even a hero. For those who identify with the Eastern Cherokee, Watie is a traitor. I'll bet most tribal members don't know the difference and don't know that many Cherokee fought for the Union.
