Re: Lt. Colonel Benjamin Carter 4th Texas

According to Sergeant Val Giles, "...no officer in Hood's Texas Brigade...was more universally loved and admired..." than Benjamin F. Carter. Born in Maury Co. Tenn. about 1831, Carter was a lawyer and the mayor of Austin before the war. The first captain of Company B, Carter was remembered after the war as "...a natural born soldier,...a strict disciplinarian, but practical and just in all things. He possessed the gift of knowing how to explain Hardee's Tactics so thoroughly that the biggest blockhead in the ranks could understand them...." Carter became a major after Gaines' Mill, but at Gettysburg was mortally wounded and captured at the foot of Little Round Top. He died on July 21, 1863, probably unaware of his promotion to lt. colonel.
