A few years ago I also was looking for Carter's grave. During my research I ran into a number of deadends. At one point I even thought that in the 1960's a new wing of the church had been built over his grave. It actually was built on top of a number of graves, just not Carter's. I will tell you what I remember off the top of my head.

On July 4th, during the Confederate retreat from Gettysburg, Carter was left at a farmhouse near New Franklin, Pennsylvania by the ambulance train. There was an excellent article in the "North & South" Civil War magazine a few years ago, by Steve French, about the route taken by that wagon train of wounded. I don't recall the name of the family where he was left, but the house is no longer standing. He remained there a day or two before local residents took him to one of many hospitals established in town. After he died on July 21th, Carter was buried in the cemetery of the Methodist Church on 2nd Avenue in Chambersburg. A local citizen, I think named Miller, volunteered a space in his plot. Then in 1888, all the bodies in that cemetery were moved to the city cemetery across town. The church had sold the property, and a house was later built on the site. All of the headstones were moved as well, although Carter did not have one. However he was mentioned in contemporary accounts of the reinterment. There were also graves on the other side of the church which were not moved. These are the ones which were later covered by the the addition of church classrooms.

I was never able to find any record indicating that Carter was later moved elsewhere. I do not think that he had any surviving descendants who would pursue returning his body to Texas. I believe that both of his daughters, and maybe even his wife, died before him. After his death, his manservant (slave) went on to Baltimore, instead of back to Texas.

Currently his grave is not marked, although that was one of the main reasons for my research. However I am curious to learn to your interest in Colonel Carter. I hope that this was helpful.
