Linda--

I highly recommend that you purchase James M. McCaffrey's "This Band of Heroes," which you can find on Amazon or various other online booksellers. This book is about Granbury's Texas Brigade, of which the Seventeeth was a part. The brigade included (among others) the Fifteenth, Seventeenth, Eighteenth, Twenty-fourth, and Twenty-fifth Cavalries, all of which had been dismounted and forced to fight as infantry. Few of these men were around to surrender at the end of the war, most having transferred, deserted, been severely wounded, or died.
