Re: Indigent Indians & Bourlands Regt.

The depopulation of the Indian Territory seems to relate primarily to the plantations and larger farms and ranches that belonged to the "Southern Indians". Refugees moving south on the main roads spent the night in these large abandoned homes. In the "backwoods" areas of the eastern Cherokee Nation, residents could hear horses on the rocky ground from long distances and would hide in the woods. Scouts through the area would encounter dozens of abandoned houses that were apparently in use. When Col Wm. A. Phillips garrisoned Ft Gibson (Blunt) with the IHG, the refugees followed and began farming and ranching. Phillips was operating Hildebrand's Mill to feed the refugees around the fort with the farming being done by "loyal" Cherokees. The refugees were mainly Creeks who were anxious to cross the Arkansas into their Nation. Keeping livestock was a problem mainly due to jayhawkers stealing cattle and selling them to the gov't at Fort Scott KS. Capt Maxwell Phillips, 3rd IHG, reported seeing many cattle at Fort Scott with the Cherokee brands of men in his company.
