Only 150 members of the original 10th Texas Cavalry returned home after the war. The lack of male head of households placed a severe economic hardship on their families and in the Upshur, Smith and Cherokee county region in general.

My Wyatt family members closed the tannery in Coffeeville and moved to Gatesville Texas after the war. My great grandfather went to work for John P. Higgins until 1893 and then worked on the Frank Gholson Ranch in Lampasas and Coryell County until he died in 1914.
