Mike:
If you haven't already done so, you ought to order Cook's service record and file from the National Archives. In researching my Galveston and Sabine Pass books I read the file and found out that Cook was a fascinating and controversial individual. At one point, he got so mad at the Texas military establishment that several other officers tried to get him declared legally insane. He was a good officer, however, and the men who served under him (like Dick Dowling and the Davis Guard) respected him highly.
