My great,great grandfather John Shepherd known as John Riley was in co c 33rd tx cav this is from his pension records. He signed up in Travis county Texas on Oct. 24 1862 age 16 from 1862 to 1863 on the Texas border near the Rio Grand in 1864 went to Powder Horn near Lavaca, Tx the went north in 1864 to near Bonham and Mckinney, Tx. Then went to Ft. Smith, Ar and joined up under Gano's Brigade and captured a train of supplies and a good many of their soldiers. Then built winter quarters the same year 1864 near Lanes Port, Ar. In Dec. 1864 took 30 days furlough then met up with the comand near Sherveport, La. with 1300 Federal prisoners.Then went to the stockade at Tyler, Tx.
Then in early 1865 in camp on the Brazos River below Waco, Tx. Then heard of Lee's surrender then our Cap. John H. Robinson left for Austin with a company of men, When we reached Austin only nine left myshelf John Riley(Shepherd)pvt, John R. Robinson 3rd Lieutenant, Oscar Cullen Orderly Sargent, Henry Burchill Pvt,Ben Coffee pvt, John Page pvt,Bill Orendorff pvt, and Frank Nolan pvt. After getting to Austin we where told to go home.
