Fort Belknap was abandoned by the 2nd U.S. Cavalry and was abandoned at the beginning of the WBTS.

Camp Belknap, near Fort Belknap in Young County, was established on March 17, 1862, for James M. Norris' Texas Rangers for the Frontier Regiment. The camp, manned by Capt. J.J. Cureton's company, did frontier patrol duty until March 1864, when the Frontier Regiment was consolidated at Fort Belknap.
