Re: McCord's Frontier Cavalry
In Response To: Re: McCord's Frontier Cavalry ()

I need to make a slight correction to this post. James M. Norris was the first commander of the Texas Frontier Regiment, appointed as were the other officers, by Gov. Francis R. Lubbock. McCord was appointed as Major at the formation of the regiment and succeeded him in early 1863 when Norris resigned. Lt. Col. Alfred T. Obenchain was initially appointed as Norris' second in command.

Appearently Norris and Obenchain were not well suited for military command on the frontier. Norris recognized his shortcomings and went back to practicing law in McClennan Co. after one year. Obenchain, on the other hand, tried to enforce a strict brand of military discipline not well received by the troopers. In August, 1862 Obenchain was appearently murdered by some of his men.

McCord was appointed Lt. Col. to fill the vacancy, and James R. "Buck" Barry became Major. When Norris' resignation became effective, McCord took command, having been elected to the post by the men of the regiment.
