Do not confuse Waul's Legion with Waul's Brigade. Col. Thomas N. Waul raised a legion of troops in Brenham Texas. Waul's Legion was the only true legion in the Confederate Army. A legion is composed of infantry, cavalry and artillery.

Waul's Legion was captured at Vicksburg on July 4, 1863 and Col. Waul was soon exchanged. On September 10, 1863, Colonel Waul was promoted to Brig. General and was given command of a brigade of dismounted and mounted cavalry.

The 13th Texas Cavalry (dismounted) was placed in Waul's Brigade and saw action at various locations in Louisiana including Mansfield and Pleasant Hill. Waul's Brigade moved into Arkansas where they saw action at Jenkin's Ferry and prevented an invasion of Texas by Union Gen. Frederick Steele.
