My GGgrandfather lived on the south side of the Lynchburg crossing and worked in a shipyard on that side of the river in the Town of San Jacinto. This was 1859 to the time he joined up in 1862. He was stationed in Galveston at the time of the abandoning the island and then recapture and then off to the Red River Campaign. He died soon after returning from the war. There were shipyards on both sides of the river at that time and before. There is a research document prepared for the Army Corps of Engineers dated May 1998. It was prepared by Espey, Huston & Assoc. with a Document No. 970571. The document discusses several shipyards and sawmills in the area.
