Camp Henry E. McCulloch was located 4 miles north of Victoria, Texas. It was one of ten training camps for infantry recruits that were established in the summer of 1861. The recruits at Camp McCulloch were from Calhounn, Victoria, Bell, Matagorda, Bexar, Gonzales, DeWitt, Travis, and Guadalupe counties. These recruits became the 6th Texas Infantry Regiment. There were also two companies of cavalry at Camp McCulloch under Capt.Edward Beaumont and Capt. James C Borden. Camp McCulloch was used from September 1861 until May 1862.

Fort Ben McCulloch was established by Gen. Albert Pike in 1862 and was located in Indian Territory, 12 miles north of the present city of Durant OK. It was located on the Texas Road at Nails Crossing of the Blue River. Nails Cemetery is across the Blue River from the site of Fort McCulloch. Col. E.J. Gurley's 30th Texas Cavalry with most recruits from Waco, passed through Fort McCulloch, I.T. in August 1863 while on their way to join Brig. Gen. William Steele's Brigade, District of Indian Territory. Brig. Gen. Samuel Bell Maxey relieved Steele in December,1863.
