Hello,

My g-g-grandfather Benjamin F. Jackson served as a sharpshooter but did so in the line infantry. He served in the 15th Texas Infantry and was wounded at "The Battle of Sterlings Plantation" in Lousiana. It was obviously a minor wound as he was listed as "returned to duty" a few days later.

Obviously the whole experience had a profound effect on him as when he returned home to Ellis County, Texas he said, "I'll never harm another living thing". He lived up to this oath as he had his brother teach his new bride Eady Swofford Jackson how to handle a gun for home protection, how to slaughter animals, and to castrate. Grandfather would butcher the slaughtered livestock but would not kill them.

Grandmother Eady was very proud of Ben's service; to the point of having hard feelings toward her future daughter-in-law (my grandmother) because of her father Cornelius N. Breeze' service as an officer in the Union Army; 19th Illinois Infantry.
