Re: Camp Nelson, in Arkansas, Texas CSA dead

The 10th Texas Cavalry was under the command of Col.Matthew F.Locke. In 1843, M.F. Locke settled on a land patent in extreme northern Upshur County Texas, nortwest of Coffeeville and Camp Tally. Locke settled there about the same time as my g.g.g.grandfather Samuel Wyatt settled north of Pittsburg,Texas and they were close friends. Locke's land patent was just south of Pittsburg, Texas and my g.g.g grandfather Samuel Wyatt's homestead grant was just north of Pittsburg,Texas. In the summer of 1861, Col. Locke raised a regiment of recruits from Upshur, Rusk, Smith and Cherokee Counties which became the 10th Texas Dismounted Cavalry after forty days of training at Camp Tally. When Col. Locke and the 10th Texas Cavalry moved out of Upshur County for Arkansas, my g.g. grandfather Elijah D.Wyatt took along several wagonloads of harness and leather goods from his father's tannery and harness shop in anticipation that the regiment would eventually obtain cavalry mounts. Unfortunately, Elijah Wyatt died of measles in Janaury 1862 just before Col.Locke and the 10th Texas Cavalry arrived in Little Rock. Col. Locke's 10th Texas Cavalry proceeded north to Fayetteville, Arkansas to join Maj.Gen.Benjamin McCulloch's Army of the West. Capt.Alexander Earp, commander of Co.D, 10th Texas Cavalry was also a friend of my g.g. grandfather Elijah D.Wyatt and his father Samuel Wyatt. The Earp family also moved to the west Texas frontier and married into the Wyatt family after the turn of the century.

In April 1862, Brig. Gen. Joseph L.Hogg was given the command of a brigade after Maj. Gen. Ben McCulloch was killed at the battle of Elkhorn Tavern. Hogg's Brigade consisted of the Locke's 10th Texas Cavalry, 3rd Texas Cavalry, Young's 11th Texas Cavalry and McRae's Arkansas Infantry Regiments. However, Brig.Gen. Hogg did not assume command of the brigade until late October 1862, following the battle of Corinth Mississippi. After the battle of Corinth, Maj. Gen. P.G.T.Beauregard had Brig.Gen. Hogg arrested for endangering a trainload of supplies. Hogg resigned and died of phneumonia shortly after being arrested. Hogg's Brigade was reorganized as Ector's Brigade and eventually surrendered at Meridian Mississippi in May 1865. Very few men of the 10th Texas Cavalry returned to their homes.

Brig. Gen. Joseph L. Hogg was the father of Texas Gov. James S. Hogg.
