For anyone looking at ancestors that went to Brazil about 1867, look for some mention of a steamer named the Tartar. This vessel was actually the former Confederate government blockade-runner Wren. She was seized by her crew at the end of the war in passage to England and turned over to US authorities. The case went to the Supreme Court. She was freed and then sold and went into merchant service as the Tartar. Somewhere in my files is an account from a lady who was among the passengers to Brazil on this vessel.
