Nichols, Sterrett and Lubbock families

Has anyone found any good on-line biographical sources for the above families? I always seem to be tracking down cousins, uncles, brothers and son-in-laws of famous people and they can be pretty hard to find What I'm specifically interested in is one of the brothers of Governor Lubbock, J.H. Sterrett and whether there was a relationship between the Nichols at Galveston (Col. later) and the Nichols working for one of the railroads out of Houston - he also apparently invented a small rifled cannon of which at least two were actually built. I'm wondering if the RR shop built them, or E.B. Nichols armory in Galveston?
