Jerry and all,
I had a lot of family from Hunt County and surrounding counties.
My Great Grandfather William Henry Arnold joined the Texas Rangers in 1858 and then when the War came along he joined the Confederacy. After the war he was with the Rangers until 1877. He drew a pension from the Confederate of Texas and from the Rangers in the Indian Wars.
While in the Confederate Army he was at the following places, maybe more but this is what is on record and in a piece written on him.
He enlisted in Greenvilee, TX in Capt Coopers Company (his Camptain in the Texas Rangers), Gen. Tom Green's Brigade, Gen Walker's Division, with Cooper as first Captain and Roberson first Colonel. Was changed to Galveston for the purpose of recaptring that place, and from there went to the lower part of Louisiana. Skirmished and fought, finally falling back to Mansfield. Was never captured nor promoted. Was in the battles of Mansfield, Pleasnat Hill, Galveston and Yellow Bayou.
We were ordered from Greenville, Hunt County, to the western part of the State to guard the frontier. I was with Terry's Rangers under Gen. Terry, and remained in the West for about 6 months and was then transferred to the Gulf Coast country, where we remained for some time and was then sent to Galveston, Texas in December, 1862, and put under Gen. Tom Green. My brother and I were in the battle that was fought on Galveston Island, when it was recaptured in 1863. We were ordered from Galveston to Sabine Pass, and from there to Louisiana. Other family members that were from Hunt Co. were Caudle, Petty and a host of others.
Visit our web site, it has some good things about the war and Col. John T. Coffee.
