What was your ancestor's name ? The Park Service does not list a history for the 17th Tex.Cav ( thy're very cursory anyway) ; however, I believe rosters are listed. Tell me his name and I'll try to look him up. I just now was looking at the rosters for the 17th. Let me know his name; I'll bet I can find him.
