In the late 1800s, clerks working for the War Department went through muster rolls, POW lists, hospital registers, and other documents in the War Department Archives and entered information from those records on the cards. Most of the original records are in the National Archives now. The clerks made some errors, particularly in the spelling of names, when they had trouble reading the writing on the records.
