In Response To: 20th Texas Infantry ()

Nancy ,

I'm taking this info straight off of the US government's Civi War Soldiers and Sailors web site. ( www.itd.gov./cwss/template.cfm ) .

20th Regiment , Texas Infantry( Elmore's Regiment)

"This regiment was organized at Galveston ,Texas in the summer od 1862 with a high percentage of middle-aged men .
They were from Hempstead, Houston , Austin , Kaufman, Galveston, Huntsville and Walker County. The regiment was assigned to the Trans Mississippi Dept. and served in Texas. It performed guard duty along the coast from Galveston to the Sabine River and in April , 1864 , it reported 21 officers and 622 men present for duty. On June 2, 1865, the regiment was included in the surrender . It's commanders were Col. Henry M. Elmore, Lt. Col. Leonard A. Abercrombie and Major Robert E. Bell."

Nancy, If you live anywhere close to Houston , you should go the Houston Fine Arts Museum and see the Texas Flag display. The beautiful flag of the 20th Texas is part of the display. It is worth the trip to see these magnificent flags that span the entire history of Texas. Contact me via email if you want details of the exhibit, etc.
Regards, Craig
