Jefferson Texas ceased to be a port on the Big Cypress Creek inland waterway port by 1875 and Coffeeville was the first stop on the immigrant road west to Dallas and SW to Waco. The wagon road southwest from Coffeeville that many post-war settlers used from east Texas went through Gilmer, Big Sandy, Tyler, crossed the Trinity River at the Taos Ferry, then on to Waco then to Gatesville where it intersected the Austin-Brownwood Stage Road.
