Re: John Burden 19th TX Cavalry

Donna,
Go to www.itd.nps.gov/cwss click on "Regiments" The click on the drop down windows and enter: Confederate-Texas-19-Cavalry then Submit.

Click on: "Search For Soldiers In This Unit" and enter only the last name of the person you are looking for. The last name only will avoid incorrect first name initials and first name mispellings.

Unfortunately the nps/cwss website does not have anything on Burford's 19th Texas Cavalry Regiment. That information must be obtained from other sources. The 19th Texas has a exellent war record in Arkansas, Indian Territory, Missouri and Louisiana with Parson's Brigade. Towards the end of the war the men of the 19th Texas were sent back to their home counties to arrest diserters, slackers and draft evaders. Five cavalry regiments were in Parson's Brigade but they seldom if ever fought together as a unit. Col. Burford was not a good field commander and after the little Rock Campaign, he turned the regiment over to a junior officer and resigned. Col. William H. Parson's raised the 19th Texas Cavalry regiment but was not given command until the Red River Campaign. Col.Parsons was one of the best field commanders in the Trans-Mississippi Department.
