Donna, if the 19th is the correct link then he was with some of the early expeditions of Texas Cavalry units in Arkansas into Missouri. He was probably captured on one of these raids and sent to Fort Davidson( Pilot Knob)which was used to occasionally house prisoners before transfer to prison camp. The hospital you mention is located in St. Louis,Mo.. It was one of 3 or 4 hospitals in St.Louis that were used to care for the sick prisoners. But to be in one of these hospitals in St.Louis was about the same as a death sentence because conditions were terrible in them.
