The Confederate Trans-Mississippi Department moved their head quarters from Shreveport to Marshall then to the Fannin Hotel in Houston as was was coming to a close. When the war ended for the Trans-Mississippi Department in June 1865,many Confederate soldiers were paroled at Camp Groce near Hempstead Texas. Two of my great, grandmother's brothers,Thomas Jefferson "Tom" Blanton and Elijah Blanton were paroled at Hempstead. Col.George A.Custer was in charge of the surrender at Hempsterad and Austin. Gen. Sheridan remained at the Union headquarters in New Orleans because he was afraid that Texas would continue the war indefinatley.

Tom Blanton was released from the 5th Texas Cavalry and Elijah Blanton was paroled from Col. Peter Hardeman's 1st Texas Cavalry at Hempsead. Tom Blanton managed to get back to Fannin County and Eli went to Gonzales Texas were he died of TB in 1867. Many Confederate veterans were rioting and sacking homes around Hempstead looking for food, horses and clothing so they could get back to their families.

There must have been some kind of hospital or TB sanatorium for Confederate veterans established near Gonzales Texas. Eli Blanton buried in a cemetery in that area.I have reached a dead-end on that research.
