I did some quick research of the 1st Texas Cavalry and the 3rd Texas Infantry. I found that in 1861, Lt.Col.A.C.Buchel joined Col. Philip N. Luckett's 3rd Texas Infantry and was assigned to the south Texas coast. In 1862, the 3rd Texas Infantry was to be assigned to Gen.John G.Walker's Texas Division at Camp Nelson Arkansas but apparently the assignemt was cancelled and the regiment remained in Texas for coastal defense.

Lt.Col.Buchel was promoted out of the 3rd Texas Infantry and made colonel in command of the 1st Texas Cavalry. The cavalry regiment was moved to Louisiana and saw action in the Red River Campaign.

Capt.James C. Borden's Company (Co. D) of the 1st Texas Cavalry Regiment was dismounted and sent to south Texas with the 3rd Texas Infantry. However, 1st Sgt. John R.Borden apparently did not go to south Texas with Capt. Borden's company and was sent to Louisiana with Buchel's 1st Texas Cavalry (1st Mounted Volunteers - 1st mounted Rifles). The 3rd Texas Infantry saw no action in south Texas and the morale deteriorated.

There is no John R.Borden listed in the NPS 3rd Texas Infantry muster roll.
