Taylor had his cavalry out to the southeast prior to Mansfield [April 8, 1864]. There was a skirmish at Crump's corner west of Marthaville, La. on the 6th [I believe]. This site is at the junction of La. 120 and 1221. There was a fairly severe cavalry fight at Wilson's Farm on the morning of April 8. This is about three miles from old Pleasant Hill on Louisiana 175, and there is a historical marker at the site.

Most of Green's cavalry had been in Texas for forage and were rushed back prior to the campaign. I don't recall if the 29th was in this group are not.

You might wish to find a copy of "A History of the 8th New Hampshire Volunteers" John M. Stanyan {Concord, NH, 1892). This regiment was converted from Inf. to Cav. and was in the vanguard of Banks advance. This book has been reprinted and has the best ay to day details of the campaign during this time period.
