Re: Native Texan Reenactor Returning Home

You are fortunate. A Union reenactor can have one uniform and it it will be correct anywhere. A reenactor for the Confedrate army should be prepared to have a large and expensive Civil War wardrobe of different uniforms and equipment because every Southern state had a different uniforms and equipment. During the war,the Harrisburg (Houston) Supply Depot in Texas was the only manufacturer of Confederate rank chevrons that were ready made just like Union chevrons. Other Confederate chevrons were crudely sewn on in the field by the soldiers.

Since two of my great grandfathers were in the Hardeman's 1st Texas Cavalry and Monroe's 2nd Arkansas Cavalry, I first started a gray-mix Confederate early war Texas cavalry NCO uniform collection, including a NCO saber but chose not to purchase expensive boots. Since I also had a great grandfather in the 14th Georgia Infantry, I am going to switch to a infantry early war collection because I don't have a horse and cavalry boots are toooo expensive. I can purchase a Enfield infantry musket rather than a cavalry Enfield musketoon and buy infantry brogans which are much cheaper than cavalry knee-high boots. In general, an Confederate infantry uniform is much cheaper than a cavalry uniform.

If you really want cheap Confederate uniform, a late war collection can be anything you can find with not shoes at all.
