It is likely that W.H. Webb enlisted in the Grayson County militia on September 1, 1861 at Sherman, Texas or at Camp Reeves, 30 miles west of Pilot Grove in SW Grayson County. He joined Capt. George R. Reeves' Company, Col. William Cocke Young's 3rd Regiment, Texas State Troops until the T.S.T were dissolved. W.H.Webb then enlisted in Co.A, Col. Peter C.Hardeman's 1st Texas Cavalry Regiment at the Warren Supply Depot in Fannin County, north of present day Savoy, Texas. W.H. Webb then rode to Fort Towson I.T. and Arkansas with the 1st Texas Cavalry.

The 31st Texas Cavalry was a completely different unit . Col.Trezevant C.Hawpe raised the 31st Texas Cavalry at Waco, Texas with recruits from Dallas. The 31st Texas rode to Missouri in the spring of 1862, and saw action with Col. John T.Coffee's 6th Missouri Cavalry, Col.Almarine Alexander's 34th Texas Cavalry, and Capt. Jo Shelby's company at the battle of Newtonia, Missouri on September 29, 1862. The 31st Cavalry moved back into Arkansas and saw action at Poison Springs and the Camden Expedition and at Cabin Creek, I.T. with Col.Peter C.Hardeman's 1st Texas Cavalry, Col. Leonidas Martin's 5th Texas Partisan Rangers, and Col. Stand Watie's 1st Cherokee Regiment.

After returning to Missouri, Col. Hawpe resigned and returned to Dallas and Maj.Michael Looscan took command of the regiment.
