I saw that a while ago...couldn't figure that our...a Mrs Hewett I believe....her husband was a Unionist??? Do you have any other info? This indeed is getting interesting. There was a Hewett involved in the smuggling of cotton..a blockade runner...I thought perhaps this may have been the case since James' brother in law John was a blockade runner, he had his own private ship the Louise, and was out of Pass Christian, MS. I thought Mrs Hewett was a widow.
There was also a Mrs Cook mentioned, who was a Loyal Citizen...I think this must have been a family friend in San Antonio....and a KNOWN TRAITOR....and I'd love to know who this was! James Had another brother in law...though I don't know if this was after the Civil WAr that he became a frother in law...a Maj. Alfred Raphell (Union)....I tend to think after the war. He did have some cousins in the North...though still trying to determine if he knew them.
His commander was to destroy the letters in from of him. I wonder what the money was about?
I am not sure he was with the Carr...but know he stayed with the Marmine Dist unill he signed his parole.
There was much more Irish backlash in Texas than in other parts...except maybe New York. The rest of the Family was in NEw Orleans and had a house in Pass CHristian as well...and there was a tiny bit, but only if you came in the famine years...they were already there before. But I have read accounts in Texas where the Irish were drug out of their homes at night and beaten. I thought James might have been feeling a bit of that when I read census reports and it said he was German. But it could be a misunderstanding. James came as a young boy of 7, so he would not have an accent. (you have to be about 10 for that- usually) So I could be totally wrong. Most people assume Marmion is French....and it was originally.
