Re: Texas Militia
In Response To: Re: Texas Militia ()

A perfect example of Randy's response is as follows:

Lt. Col. Peter C.Hardeman's 1st Texas Cavalry-Arizona Brigade and four other regiments were raised in Colorado County and mustered at Eagle Lake with plans to retake the Arizona - New Mexico Territory that was lost in Brig.Gen. H.H. Sibley's disasterous campaign in New Mexico. After muster, the first duty of the 1st Texas Cavalry was to disarm disloyal German citizens at Alleyton that were opposed to the Conscription Act. Charges of brutality towards the Germans were directed at some of the men in the 1st Texas Cavalry.

The 1st Texas Cavalry was moved to Fannin County by companies, leaving Colorado County with a total of 500 men and arriving at the Warren Supply Depot in Fannin County with 350 effectives. Most of the men deserted on the march to Fannin County. The regiment raised an additional 250 recruits from local militia companies in Fannin, Grayson, Collin and Hunt Counties. Many of those men deserted when it became known that the 1st Texas Cavalry was going to be moved into Arkansas and placed in Gen. Samuel B. Maxey's Division. The deserters, former militia and unattached recruits were placed in Maj. James Roberson Diamond's Brush Battalion, Col. James G.Bourlands Border Regiment,C.S.A. Although under Confederate authority, the Border Regiment did not leave the state, except for patrols and minor skirmishes with outlaws and Indians north of the Red River.
