Re: Letter: Skirmish with 13th Texas Cavalry Batta

My ggg grandfather, Edward C. Womack, was listed as one of those who lost his horse in this skirmish. He was a member of Waller's Battalion, Company E (Woodward's Company), so apparently the other companies were involved besides Co. A. According to the Handbook of Texas, Waller lost most of his horses and supplies in a surprise federal attack in 1862 and I suppose this is the one to which it refers.

Incidentally, E.C. Womack lived in Winn Parish, Louisiana, prior to the war and had previously served in Co. C, 12th Louisiana Infantry but was discharged at Columbus, Kentucky, October 7, 1861 (most likely due to disease as I am told this unit endured a measles epidemic).

According to family tradition, Edward's parents Jesse and Martha Womack, along with his younger siblings, Nancy, Elizabeth, and Lewis, moved to Bee County, Texas, in the Spring of 1862 from Winn Parish. Edward may have accompanied them on the move or joined them later, but in any case in May of 1862, Womack enlisted in Waller's Battalion at Goliad, Texas (about 30 miles away).

Sometime during the War, Edward apparently found time to return to Winn Parish and marry Sarah Jordan, and father a child, Martha Ella Womack (my gg grandmother), who was born in Louisiana, February 11, 1864.

After the war, Edward, Sarah, and Martha Ella lived in Winn Parish for a time and then moved to Texas. Edward was a postmaster, farmer, and business owner in Brown County. He was also a school trustee. He died in 1912 and is buried in the Zephyr cemetery just southeast of Brownwood.

I have documentary evidence for most of this except for his marriage and the birth of his daughter. This is somewhat of a puzzle, as unfortunately Winn Parish marriage and birth records from this period have been destroyed, but it has been interesting to learn of my ancestor's service in units from both La. and Texas.
