My great-grandfather Elijah Pennington, serving in the 22nd Albama became a Galvanized Yankee after capture at Vicksburg, return to his unit and then captured again and sent to Rock Island Prison Camp. He enlisted on the Union Side and served aboard Union ships, returning to his new home in Campbell, Dunklin County, Missouri, where he is buried. I assumed that he was given the choice of the Union side or remaining in prison. I am still researching the subject and more details about his military service.
